Tack of the Day's Tips & Gear Guides

5 Reasons Why You Should Never Swap Your Riding Helmet for a Bike Helmet

When you're shopping for the best deals at the Tack of the Day Helmet Center, it’s important to remember that not all head protection is created equal. While it might be tempting to use a bicycle helmet for a quick schooling session, the "physics of the fall" in the equestrian world requires a completely different level of engineering.

  1. The "Point of Impact" Difference Bicycle helmets are designed for forward-motion falls onto flat pavement. Conversely, riding helmets are specifically engineered to provide extended coverage of the occipital lobe (the back of the skull). Because riders often fall backward or sideways during an "unscheduled dismount," this lower profile is a critical safety feature that bike helmets simply don't offer.

  2. The "Single vs. Multiple" Impact Rule A bike helmet is designed to crush once upon impact with a flat surface. Riding helmets are built with thicker, high-impact shells—often using advanced materials found in brands like One K or Trauma Void—to withstand the possibility of a "secondary impact," such as a horse’s hoof or a stumble immediately following a fall.

  3. Ventilation vs. Vulnerability While cyclists need massive open vents for cooling at low speeds, those same vents are a liability in the barn. Certified riding helmets, such as those from Ovation or TuffRider, feature smaller, mesh-guarded vents. These allow for airflow while preventing branches or crops from entering the helmet during a fall in the ring or on the trail.

  4. The "Sliding" Factor and Neck Torque Bicycle helmets are often aerodynamic and elongated. If you fall while wearing a helmet with a "tail," that protrusion can act as a lever, jerking the head and neck sideways upon impact. Riding helmets are rounded or oval to allow the head to slide or roll, significantly reducing torque on the rider's neck.

  5. Stability and Harness Security A horse is a 1,200lb animal that changes the dynamics of a fall. Riding helmets utilize a specialized 3-point or 4-point harness system designed to keep the helmet perfectly in place during the high-speed, multi-directional movement of a buck or bolt. Standard bike helmets often lack this specialized stability, potentially shifting just when you need the protection most.

IMPORTANT TO KNOW: Rigorous Testing Standards (ASTM/SEI vs. CPSC) This is the most vital distinction. Every helmet sold we sell must meet ASTM F1163 standards, which include a "sharp object" penetration test. Bicycle helmets are not tested against pointed objects like jump cups or fence rails, which could easily pierce the large, open vents found on cycling gear.
